Oh my southern little heart. If you've never been to Charleston, SC or you've been contemplating whether or not to visit, I need you to stop what you're doing and move it to the top of your list. My husband James and I decided to go to Charleston for my birthday and when I say that all of our expectations were met, that is an understatement. Charleston is very worthy of being recognized as such a hospitable destination because everywhere we went, we felt like family.
Our first stop? Magnolias, a restaurant that specializes in southern cuisine. First thing is first, be sure to park in their parking lot for free parking after validation! Once seated, we started with the Down South Egg Rolls which had collard greens, chicken, tasso ham, red pepper and spicy mustard puree, and a peach chutney right on top. They were GREAT! I then had the Grilled Filet of Beef, which was topped with pimento cheese and accompanied with steamed grilled beans, a potato cake, and grilled tomatoes. James had the grilled porterhouse pork chop with Carolina red rice. There wasn't much conversation over dinner because we were too busy savoring each and every single bite, praying it would never end. Then, because we were soooo stuffed, we opted out of getting dessert BUT because Magnolia's staff is so incredible, they still sent us home with a yummy multi layered chocolate cake for my birthday!
Next, we decided to get lost in the cobble stone roads and we stumbled across King Street, which is filled with local shops and even your top brands like MK and Gucci. King St. is perfect for window shopping and you'll even find the theater from the movie The Notebook , so don't forget to stop and take a picture!
We woke up nice and early the next morning and headed straight to Hominy Grill. Mind you, it was 8 o'clock in the morning and there was already a huge line forming out front. We found ourselves asking "can this restaurant really live up to it's hype?". The answer to that question is yes, oh freaking yesssss. Once the doors opened, we were immediately seated and asked what we wanted to eat and drink. We ordered sweet tea and the Charleston Nasty Biscuit. I went to check the Insta and when I looked up, our server was already back with our drinks and our food! Literally, the first thought that came to mind was oh great, the food is already made and it's going to be dry and cold. When I took my first bite, I'm pretty sure I said Hallelujah, because OMG, it was probably the best thing I have ever had in my life. The chicken was perfectly seasoned and crispy, the biscuit was fluffy and buttery, and the gravy.......the gravy was perfection. It was at that very moment that I realized why people line up outside, because it really does live up to it's hype.
We then headed to explore all that Charleston had to offer. In my opinion, these are a few places that are a must see!
Rainbow Row is an absolute must!!! The row of colorful houses is so mesmerizing.
Battery Park, so that you can day dream of one day owning a southern mansion!
Waterfront Park so you can dip your feet in the Insta famous Pineapple fountain!
King Street, as for-mentioned, perfect for window shopping and supporting local businesses!
- Historic Charleston City Market, great for souvenirs and picking up some yummy BBQ!
You're able to see all these sights in one day being that they are all in the same vicinity. You can even rent bicycles to get around, which we will definitely be doing next time!
After being tourist, we had worked up an appetite, so it was time for our last dinner in Charleston, and we saved the best for last! Being a steak connoisseur, I had to see what all the rave was about for Halls Chophouse. When we first arrived, we were immediately greeted by Billy Hall, one of the owners! When he found out we were there to celebrate my birthday, he personally brought us complimentary champagne! The server then came over and we were able to pick the exact steak we wanted. I wish I could put into words how good my rib eye was, but anything I say just wouldn't do justice. Again, being so stuffed we decided no dessert, but they still sent us home with a complimentary cake! To make things even more awesome, just the other day I received a hand written post card in the mail, thanking us for coming in. Everyone that night really made sure we had a great time and made us feel like family!
The next morning we got ready to hit the road and head back home, but just before our 5 hour drive, we stopped at Callie's HLB. The perfect grab and go biscuit shop that makes my mouth water even 'til this day. They had so many choices to choose from, from biscuit sandwiches to mini stuffed biscuits! I'm sure whatever you get there, will be great (especially if it has pimento cheese) ;)
I honestly couldn't have asked for a better place to spend celebrating my Jordan year (23rd birthday) and I couldn't have asked for a better husband for putting up with all my foodie needs.
